The problem
Your IT budget arrives at the board as a single number.
No-one can challenge what they cannot see.
- It lands as one line in the management accounts — not a P&L you can question.
- The Finance Director is the de facto IT owner, without ever being trained for it.
- The MSP and top three vendors set the agenda. There is no-one in the room pushing back.
- Renewals auto-renew. Utilisation is whatever someone says it is. AI spend is on a credit card somewhere.
- The board asks “are we getting value?” and nobody can give a straight answer.
What you get
Three artefacts that turn IT spend into a P&L.
1
Excel workbook
10 tabs, native formulas, no macros. One blank for your data, one pre-populated as a worked example. Imports cleanly into Google Sheets.
2
17-page Start Here guide
The reasoning. Run / Grow / Transform explained, plain-English glossary, 10 questions to ask your IT team, common traps, and a 90-day plan.
3
3-slide board deck
PowerPoint template (blank + worked example). Where the money goes, where the waste is, three decisions to confirm. Goes in your next pack.
The output
One A4 page. Six numbers. A board narrative. Three decisions.
This is what the toolkit produces — populated automatically from your inputs.

Who this is for
Buy this if you are…
- An MD or FD of a UK business turning over £10m to £100m
- The de facto technology owner, without a CTO or CIO in post
- Going to the board with IT and unhappy about how the conversation goes
- Renewing a major IT contract in the next 6 months
- Looking to challenge MSP or supplier proposals you do not have time to validate
Don't buy this if…
- You already have a full-time CTO or CIO
- You run a startup — this is built for established mid-market businesses
- Your turnover is under £5m or over £500m (the benchmarks won't fit)
- You want a generic IT cost spreadsheet — this is opinionated and FD-shaped
About the author
Built by Mike Fraser.

I work with mid-market boards as a Virtual Technology Advisor — sitting beside FDs and MDs as their outsourced CTO, attending board meetings, managing IT suppliers, and translating technology decisions into language the leadership team can actually act on.
This toolkit is the diagnostic I run on every new client — packaged so you can run it yourself.
Where I've done this before
CTO of two UK-listed businesses (£120m and £25m revenue). Divisional CTO of a FTSE-listed company. CTO of a £15m business. 9 acquisitions and 3 divestments led on the technology side.
Based in Malmesbury. Working across London and the South West — Bristol, Bath, Cheltenham, Swindon, Chippenham, and surrounding areas.

FAQ
Common questions
What if I do not use Microsoft Excel?
The workbook works in Excel 2019, Excel 365, and Google Sheets. All formulas (SUMIF, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, MINIFS) are supported in Sheets — the file imports cleanly via File → Make a copy.
Will this work for my sector?
The toolkit is built for UK mid-market businesses turning over £10m to £100m. Sector benchmarks are included for Banking / Financial Services, Manufacturing / Distribution, Professional Services, and Retail. If you are in a different sector, the structure still applies; you'll want to validate the percentages against your own management accounts before quoting them externally.
What is the licence?
Single-business licence: covers everyone in your organisation. Not for redistribution, resale, or sharing externally. Each separate organisation needs its own licence.
What is your refund policy?
14 days, no questions asked. If the toolkit is not what you expected, email hello@mikefraser.me within 14 days of purchase and I will refund in full.
What is a "fit call" and how does it relate?
A fit call is a free 20-minute conversation about whether my Virtual Technology Advisor retainer would suit your business — separate from this toolkit. The toolkit gives you the diagnostic; the retainer is for if you want help acting on it. More on fit calls.
Will it stay up to date?
Annual refresh: I update the benchmark figures (Avasant, Gartner, etc.) once a year, typically in Q1. Free updates within v1.x. Buyers are notified by email.
Who handles VAT?
The checkout is handled by Lemon Squeezy, who are the Merchant of Record. They charge UK VAT to UK buyers (reclaimable on your VAT return), and handle EU and US tax automatically. You receive a proper VAT invoice at checkout.
